The A8 sets new standards with its mild-hybrid engine technology, offering powerful and supremely efficient engines mated to the seamless Audi 8-speed tiptronic transmission. Boasting 210 kW and 250 kW from the 3.0-litre TDI and TFSI engines respectively, the A8 employs ground-breaking technology in the form of a lithium-ion battery and Belt Starter Generator (BSG) that operates as an electric motor or as an alternator. In its first function, it provides up to 60 Nm of torque, and when the A8 reaches its target speed, allows for the combustion to be switched off for up to 40 seconds between 30 and 160km/h. The BSG has enough power to restart the engine instantly with just a touch of the accelerator pedal. During deceleration, energy is recovered and fed back to the vehicle. The A8 drive management constantly monitors and evaluates the situation and works in concert with the predictive efficiency assistant, and current route data entered in the MMI for even greater efficiencies.
The optional dynamic all-wheel steering assists the driver with active steering intervention on the front and rear axles, giving the A8 manoeuvrability that belies its generous proportions. The vehicle’s driving dynamics are enhanced regardless of speed, but at low speeds, the steering effort for the driver is reduced and the vehicle’s turning circle made smaller by turning the rear wheels in the opposite direction. At high speeds, the steering angle at the front and rear axles steer in the same direction to improve stability around bends. for razor-sharp steering response.
